Whether you're a blowout person or dry-and-style person, there are always two tools involved: In the first case, a hair dryer and round brush; in the second a dryer and straightener or curling iron. However, thermal brushes, also called heated brushes, seek to simplify the whole styling process.
Thermal hair brushes are "reimagined curling irons and flat brushes with bristles," explains Kevin Lee, style director, Julien Farel Restore Salon and Spa in New York, who adds that there are two general camps of this hair tool, one that uses hot air, and one that uses heated plates.
Though they can have different functions, in general, they are used to help you achieve your desired hairstyle in less time than traditional hair tools. "The flat thermal hot brush will give you a smooth finish, whereas the round thermal hot brush will give you everything from body to a wave or curl depending on the size of the brush and your hair texture," explains Lee. "The smaller the brush the tighter the wave or curl."
Ahead, find the best thermal brush for you, with suggestions from Lee, as well as top-reviewed picks and best-sellers.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Do You Use a Thermal Hair Brush?
Different tools—straightening vs. curling, for example—will have different instructions. But in general, Lee says to avoid daily use and be sure to use a heat protectant first.
"Stay aware of how long your hot tool stays in any section of hair–the point is to heat up the hair to set it, and close off the cuticle to make the hair shine, not burn the cuticle layer," says the stylist, who reminds that practice makes perfect.
What Type of Thermal Brush Should You Use?
According to Lee, all hair types can use thermal brushes, but the key is finding the right one. "You want to choose a brush that has an adjustable heat setting. For example, if you have delicate baby fine hair, you would want to use a lower heat setting to minimize damage from heat to the hair. If you have coarse, thick hair, you will want to use a higher heat setting to smooth out your hair's cuticle layer, creating a smoother, shinier quality." explains the stylist. No matter what, Lee says, "Your stylist will have a much better understanding of what to recommend to you."
